Using money raised through the National Lottery, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) gives grants to sustain and transform our heritage. From museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, the natural environment and cultural traditions, we invest in every part of our diverse heritage.
Often, when people think about the HLF, there is still a perception that HLF is only about buildings and museums. HLF funding is about much more than that. It’s about creating opportunities for volunteering, learning about and celebrating our heritage.
We use the term natural heritage to include habitats, species and landscape conservation. Our investment has helped to conserve and improve some of our most threatened habitats and species, giving people the opportunity to learn about nature and get involved in species recording and habitat management. Recently funded projects have focussed on creating habitats, recording numbers and raising awareness of bees with Bumble Bee Conservation and a project run by Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust to open the 360 Observatory to enable people to interact with nature and see the Dyfi Ospreys in their natural habitat.
HLF’s Strategic Framework (2013-2018) clearly sets out that we want to encourage more fundable projects that deliver outcomes for the UK’s natural heritage. We want to do more to encourage strong applications from the natural heritage sector.
We offer a number of funding programmes with grants starting from £3,000. In assessing applications, we take account of the broad range of outcomes for heritage, people and communities that projects will achieve. Decisions on all grants under £2million are made locally by a Committee of people from all across Wales and development team can support you with your application. We recommend that all applicants complete a project enquiry form prior to completing an application. This short form gives you the opportunity to tell us about your initial project ideas and us the opportunity to provide some initial feedback on your initial ideas with the aim of helping you to maximise your chance of a successful application.
Our website contains all the details of our programmes, funded projects and useful guidance. We hold grants surgeries and workshops across Wales, offering you the opportunity to discuss your project ideas. You can find more information and available dates on the Wales page of the HLF website.
