It is with great sadness that Interlink RCT learnt of the passing of Danny Evans, Treasurer of the Aberdare Valley Football League over the weekend.
Danny began volunteering with Hirwaun YMCA FC at the age of 12, hand delivering the postcards printed to confirm matches with opponents and referees by bike every Tuesday evening, and was elected to the Management Committee of the Aberdare Valley Football League in 1974. He remained with the organisation as Secretary then Treasurer, helping to ensure that generations of footballers enjoyed the beautiful game in the Cynon Valley, and celebrated 50 years’ involvement in local Football in November 2015.
Some years ago Danny approached Interlink RCT to enquire about support for the League’s Youth Academy, and was successful, along with Youth Football Development Officer Theresa Kemble in attaining funding from the WCVA’s Gwirvol Youth Grants Scheme to encourage ever more young volunteers to get involved in the Academy as volunteer Football Coaches. He also encouraged young Volunteer Ryan Davies to join Interlink’s Youth Grants Panel for RCT, a position he still holds. Danny was also a regular on Interlink RCT’s Cynon Valley Forum where he initiated a Volunteering Fair which took place in Mountain Ash in 2017. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious and he leaves a very real legacy of young football volunteers in the Cynon Valley.
Danny had a friendly and easy going nature which brought him a legion of friends in the game and in the voluntary sector within and beyond the Cynon Valley, and he was also well loved in West Wales as a loyal supporter of Haverfordwest County.
Interlink RCT extends its deepest sympathies to Danny’s widow Carol-Ann, to his three children and all his many friends and family.
