During 2020, Mrs G contacted a community coordinator on the advice of her GP surgery to ask about possible help with shopping for her and her husband. Mrs G was 79 while her husband was 83 and disabled. Moreover, they weren’t able to leave the house due to the pandemic. Both were very concerned with how they were going to manage to get shopping, as online services were overwhelmed and the only available delivery slots were weeks away. This was very worrying for the couple, as they needed groceries before then.
One of our community coordinators contacted Diane Matheson from Welcome Friends about the possibility of having a volunteer who was willing to help support the couple with this issue. Diane explained that their befriending service now offered telephone befriending, and also some of the volunteers were happy to offer more practical help in terms of shopping and collecting prescriptions.
The coordinator contacted Mrs G and explained the support on offer. She was very happy to hear of the help available, and the coordinator got permission from Mrs G to pass her contact details onto a colleague who organised the support.
Mrs G said:
“Thank you so much for your help, it’s really appreciated. And thank you for acting so quickly.”
