Vol Factor is our own fund for youth-led volunteering projects. It exists to raise aspirations as well as to promote creativity and individuality in RCT’s young people. Once they’ve come forward with the ideas, Vol Factor makes them happen. Last year’s Vol Factor took place during flooding and as well as a global pandemic. Yet these major challenges didn’t stop the youngsters from achieving their goals.
We spent £36,000 on 30 projects. The young people hit all the targets and themes that they wanted to. A bumper crop of projects saw over 130 youngsters take part in volunteering projects in RCT, and each year, the young people get more inventive and confident. Some projects directly improved community cohesion, as when young people cleaned up their community.
With the help of Michelle at Spectacle Theatre, the panel held a Freshers Fair where young people were invited to share their project ideas. The panel made up of young people were there to provide advice, guidance, hints and tips. Because of them, the full funding allocation was spent and projects were delivered. At visioning events, groups talked through and developed ideas with panel members. Although sadly, the annual Youth Grants Celebration had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
The youth grants panel who administers the project in RCT gave more money than any other panel in Wales. It was a major achievement, which underscores our effectiveness. In the process, we learnt that there are so many projects and so many more young people who want to take part.
Kari Jones of the Youth Grants Panel said:
“Rhondda Cynon Taf is a community minded place, and the Vol Factor makes me proud to live here.”
